This is because Windows XP and Vista automatically search for network files and printers every time you open a System window such as My Computer (Figure 1). – The same can be applied to Vista (Figure 2). To fix this and to increase browsing significantly you can do the following:

Windows XP

1. Open My Computer

2. Click on Tools menu

3. Click on Folder Options

4. Click on the View tab.

5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box

6. Click Apply

7. Click Ok

8. Reboot your computer

Windows Vista

1. Click on the “Start” button, and in the search box, type in “Windows Explorer” (without the quotes) and then press enter

2.When Windows Explorer opens, click on the “Organize” menu item/button and select “Folder and Search Options.”

3. On the “Folder Options” window that comes up, click on the “View” tab.

4. Check the box that says “Always show icons, never thumbnails.”

5.Click OK and close that instance of “Windows Explorer” – your done!
